This week we celebrated World Oceans Day, a reminder that truly innovative products will also protect the environment.
The devil is in the detail, quite literally when it comes to pollution: the tiniest microfibre, pictured here, which is the fifth of the diameter of a human hair, can cause serious damage. These microfibres are shed from textiles when we wash them. They come from all manmade materials and can affect marine life but also our own health and the environment.
What can we do to help prevent microfibre pollution?
1. Conserve Water. Use less water so excess runoff and wastewater will not flow into the ocean.
2. Consider quality and traceability when purchasing a new garment. We need to ask ourselves: what is the fabric and where is it made? Does it reduce pollutants?
For high performance choose synthetic materials engineered to reduce microfibre shedding such Polartec Power Air, which we use for our fleece jackets
3. For materials that may shed microfibres such a traditional pile fleece, frontload wash using a wash bag such as Guppyfriend which helps prevent fibre shedding.
